Volunteer

Give back with your most valuable resource: time.

We’re big on books, but small on staff. From reading aloud to children and families, to sorting book donations, to helping distribute books, we have a volunteer opportunity to fit you! It’s fun and easy to volunteer on your own or with a group. Click to read testimonials from BookSpring volunteers!

For New Volunteers

New to BookSpring? Start by filling out an application and registering for our monthly orientation. Orientations are held the third Tuesday of each month at 11:00 am or 6:00 pm for approximately 30 minutes.

Please note that unfortunately, we cannot accommodate mandatory community service obligations.

For Current Volunteers

Welcome back, we’re glad you’re here! If you are already registered and have attended a training, view our calendar of upcoming activities and sign up to volunteer!

Weekly Volunteer Schedule

There are in-office book sorting/labeling shifts every day of the work week, with expanded evening and weekend hours. You must sign up via the SignUp Calendar. These are open to both individuals and to groups, but make sure you reserve an open slot for yourself and for all your group members if applicable. The general schedule is as follows:

Mondays from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm
Tuesdays from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Wednesdays from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
(Evening Shifts) First & Second Thursday of every month  from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Fridays from 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm
LAST Saturday of every month from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

You should use the SignUp Calendar at least three days before your desired time slot. It’s quick and easy and sends reminders of your desired placements. Please make sure to check your email often leading up to your scheduled session, as the schedule is subject to interruptions for holidays, special events, summer hours, and unexpected cancellations.

Training

Periodically, BookSpring offers special training for those interested in helping our program partners offsite. You will be notified of these via email. In the meanwhile, if you want to read aloud to a group of children but don’t know what to do, please check out these tips about of reading aloud to a group of children, by our friend Devo Carpenter from the Austin Public Library.
