Digital children’s books can be a terrific online addition to a print library, if the e-books are simple (without lots of pop-up distractions) and if they are used to read together as a family. While BookSpring recommends starting with print books for all infants and toddlers, digital and downloadable books can also help young readers if they are read aloud together with an adult caregiver or friend.
Our friends at Unite for Literacy have developed a fun and free library of digital books on topics such as nature, health, families, and community helpers, best for children ages 3-8. They will only work online while you are connected to the internet, but they also have voice overs and other interactive features for you to explore over and over again. See more below. And yes, they really are free!
These online books will work on any internet device connected to the web (phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop) through a browser and doesn’t even require a log-in. However, you will be asked through a pop up window to provide your home zip code to help with their (and our!) research. There are books about zoos, family life, and holidays, and it is updated frequently with new titles.
