BookSpring and the Andy Roddick Foundation (ARF) partnered up in an effort to battle the summer slide through the foundation’s 2016 Summer Learning Program at Pecan Springs Elementary.
The foundation operates a six-week summer learning program with a focus on STEM, literacy, arts, and sports. The overall goal of the program is to develop skills in elementary students that will promote lifelong achievement.
ARF Director of Programs and Grants Mary Riggs said, “The Pecan Springs scholars were so excited to choose their own book and were very thoughtful about it.”
Through this amazing partnership, over 90 students received brand new books on Wednesday, July 22.
“They immediately started reading their books as soon as they picked them out and were excitedly sharing with each other and staff what they were reading,” Riggs added.
It is no mystery that summer break can result in an exponential loss of academic skills. According to the National Summer Learning Association, students not engaged in summer learning can lose up to two to three months of reading and math skills. Consequently, this results in academic achievement gaps, especially among low income students.
Our Schools and Libraries Partner Manager Wayne Holstine said, “We were so excited to be able to reach students during the summer!”
This partnership will result in further promoting literacy among students before the start of the new school year.
