Fall Day of Caring

Fall Day of Caring Greater Austin Reading CoalitionFall Day of Caring is a day that embraces and celebrates volunteerism through a day of service hosted by United Way for Greater Austin (UWATX). Corporate volunteer teams, individuals from the community, and organizations like BookSpring can participate.

This year’s Fall Day of Caring benefited members of the Greater Austin Reading Coalition. The coalition strives to bring together diverse literacy advocates to increase the number of children reading on grade level by 4th grade

On Thursday, September 30, together we distributed 5,000 books through the Advocacy Outreach (Education Services: Family Literacy), Ashford Montessori, Austin ISD, Austin Smiles (The Austin Plastic Surgery Foundation), Creative Action, Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Half Helen, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Pflugerville Public Library, SAFE Alliance, Sammy’s House, and Freedom Schools.

We aim to increase access to books and literacy resources for children and their families across Central Texas through our collaboration.

Importance of Grade-Level Reading

BookSpring is a proud member of the Greater Austin Reading Coalition. Children must use reading to learn other subjects by the fourth grade.

According to The Annie E. Casey Foundation, “For this reason, kids who reach fourth grade without being able to read proficiently are more likely to struggle academically and eventually drop out of school” (2014).

Low reading proficiency reduces the earning potential and chances for successful careers as adults. That is why the coalition’s efforts are vital to better serving our community.
