Ed: Building Early Literacy In Education

BookSpring Ed ProgramsWe partner with educators to give their students the best possible opportunities to succeed by building a strong foundation for literacy.

Reading is a fundamental skill that defines the academic success or failure of students. Some students begin elementary school struggling. Creating a literacy-rich environment in schools enriches experiences for students who may have limited exposure to literacy due to a lack of resources at home.

Books for Me

Books for Me is a books for ownership program implemented in public and charter schools in high poverty zip codes. Students can choose and keep three books per year at no cost to them or their families. Allowing children to explore their interests and make their own choices has increased their motivation to read.

Summer Success

Summer Success is a classroom-based program for 1st and 2nd-grade teachers to provide reading support in vocabulary and oral comprehension together with a distribution of 10 books at their reading level before the summer break. Our results show that up to 36% of children participating in our program perform better in reading scores after the summer than a matched comparison group. In some cases even reverses the “summer slide” for many students.

Programs target students from age five to 12. The results are improved vocabulary, story comprehension, and reading test scores for students in elementary schools.
