How I Learned to Read with The Read-It-Yourself Storybook

Submitted by: Kellie Clark Moy

I actually recall the moment that the electrical spark in my brain, called reading, occurred.

It was 1974. I was 4 years old and sitting on the floor of the family den with my copy of The Read-It-Yourself Storybook resting in my lap. I turned the page of the first short story, “The Monkey and The Bee” –  and it happened!

Four years of parents reading bedtime stories, a great preschool teacher, and repetitions of the ABCs collided into a single moment during which the letters on the pages became words, and the words formed sentences, and I heard myself saying them aloud … I could read!

I was gleeful! I jumped up and ran through the house to find my dad. “Daddy, I can read!” Now, at 43 years old, it is one of the most magical childhood memories I have, and that book is still one of my most prized possessions. In fact, my copy of The Read-It-Yourself Storybook is so dearly treasured that I gave it away—to my own children.  Savanna, who is 10 years old, learned to read from that same book. Today, Justin, at 5 years old, reads to me from that very volume almost every night. It is my fondest wish that one day my grandchildren will sit on my lap, wrapped in my arms, reading from that wonderful collection of stories with me.
