Book A Trip on RIF Airlines

Submitted by Jill Gonzalez, Director of Programs

Are you headed out of town this summer? Or are you having a staycation? Either way, make sure to pack a good book!

When you read, you can go anywhere! One of the favorite motivational activities of BookSpring’s Reading is Fundamental (RIF) librarians, teachers AND students is “Book A Trip.” Developed by librarian Judith Muck from Cook Elementary, each librarian brings their own flair to the program. Most librarians eagerly take on the role of pilot, donning the jacket, cap and wings. They scan each visitors boarding pass and remind the ladies and gentlemen to fasten their seatbelts and make sure their luggage is stowed securely under the seat in front of them.

During the flight, students are treated to a story, read aloud and sometimes even an in-flight snack! One student, concerned about the journey, asked the librarian to call his mom so that she would know he was leaving school. Children’s imaginations are ignited by this activity and teachers love it too. One librarian scheduled a special flight after school just for teachers!

After the flight, students deplane and head to the luggage carousel where their brand new book choices are waiting. Every child chooses his or her own brand new book. Volunteers are there to help students sign their name in the book and get the story started with them.
