Butterflies and Bookworms for 6-8 year olds

Have you ever heard of a Bookworm?  Bibi here, the BookSpring Butterfly.  People call people “book worms” because they really really like books!  But did you know there is also a real thing called a book worm?  It’s an insect that eats the pages of a book!  I love people who are bookworms, but real book worms, not so much.  Let’s take special care of our books, and they’re last a long, long time.  And we can also read books right now, online, together!

Watch videos, download books to read together, and explore things to do with BookSpring.

Things to Do Together

Talk: Have you ever learned about butterflies or caterpillars before? What colors have you seen them be?

Read/Write: Read this Poem: “I wish I were a bookworm / A bookworm’s never glum / Cause how can you be grumpy / When you read all day for fun.” Try to memorize it, or make up your own about butterflies and book worms!

Espanol: “Deseo ser un gusano de libro / Un gusano de libro nunca está triste / Despues de todo, como puedes estar triste / cuando puedes leer por diversión todo el día.”

Create: Make an Egg carton butterfly – cut an egg carton to have 4 cups like a square (2 long and 2 wide). Add some paper antennas and decorate however you’d like to! (Haga clic aquí por más instrucciones en español)

Explore: Get an up-close look at butterflies with this Butterfly Jungle Cam! Here’s another video of the Butterfly House at a zoo. How many different colors of butterflies can you spot?

Did you know that in most places in America, there are around 100 different species of butterflies? Mexico is home to over 2000 different types of butterflies! Get outside and see if you can find any little critters like caterpillars, worms, or butterflies. Hint: butterflies like warm, sunny places with low plants.
