Butterflies and Bookworms for 3-5 year olds

Have you ever heard of a Bookworm? Bibi here, the BookSpring Butterfly. People call people “book worms” because they really really like books! But did you know there is also a real thing called a book worm? It’s an insect that eats the pages of a book! I love people who are bookworms, but real book worms, not so much. Let’s take special care of our books, and they’re last a long, long time. And we can also read books right now, online, together!

Watch videos, download books to read together, and explore things to do with BookSpring.

Things to Do Together

Talk: What does a caterpillar look like? What does a butterfly look like? Are they similar or different in any way?
Write/Draw: Draw a picture of your very own butterfly! Does it have big wings or small ones? Is it all one color or many different colors?

Create: Make an Egg Carton Caterpillar! Step 1: Cut a cardboard egg carton down the middle for the “body” and decorate with paint or markers. Optional: add stickers or “jewels” on each segment of the body Step 2: Add a face to the end section and “antennas” if you have pipe cleaner/toothpicks/other material you want to use for antennas. Explore: Did you know that there are around 100 different species of butterflies in most places in America? Mexico is home to over 2000 different types of butterflies! Get outside and see if you can find any little critters like caterpillars, worms, or butterflies. Hint: butterflies like warm, sunny places with low plants.

Watch “If I were a butterfly” from our Austin PBS to learn about the life cycle of a monarch butterfly.
