The Benefits of Joining the Family Readathon

By Mariela Rodriguez, Communications Director

Children’s books have the power to provide much comfort during chaotic times, and this is perhaps the greatest lesson I have learned as a parent. COVID anxiety is something everyone is experiencing.

My stepdaughter Katherine is nine years old and a full-fledged 3rd grader. I met her when she was four years old. We became a family over a year ago. Adjusting to family life has certainly been a rollercoaster with plenty of ups and downs. Establishing routines and maintaining them, especially during this pandemic, has been of the utmost importance.

Katherine has been doing virtual learning since March 2020. While we are blown away by her maturity and adaptability, we know that the world feels heavy right now, especially for kids. I credit her ability to adapt and continue to learn and thrive to her love of reading.

Include Reading in Your Routine

Bedtime stories were a Father-Daughter activity before we moved in together. Slowly it evolved to our nightly routine. These days Katherine reads to me! I am enjoying seeing her confidence and enthusiasm for reading grow. Be sure to check out BookSpring’s Book Reviews. Members of our community share what they enjoy reading the most! It is a great place to get some ideas on what to read or what your children may enjoy reading.

The Benefits of Reading

Reading together sparks conversations on many different topics that wouldn’t come up in our everyday lives. It is important to disconnect, put the devices down, talk, connect, and learn from each other.

Reading is the greatest gift we can give, from relaxing and lowering stress to stimulating the brain, boosting moods, deepening empathy, and many more amazing benefits. Reading together ensures everyone benefits. That’s why we are participating in the Family Readathon! Check out our Readathon Page

Joining the Family Readathon

Our goal during the Family Readathon is to complete The Baby-Sitters Club graphic novel series. We began the series during the holiday break. Katherine is a big fan of Raina Telgemeier since her Smile series. We also want to raise $500 to support the BookSpring in mailing free books to families experiencing economic hardship.
Reading has helped our family grow closer during this pandemic, and we hope it will help others do the same. Not to mention it is a great way to give back to our community and reach families who don’t have books at home!
