Harvest Time for 6-8 year olds

There are many kinds of fruits and vegetables that are only ready to eat at a certain time of year.  We like to call it Harvest Time, when everything is at the peak of freshness, ready to be eaten or stored away for a long winter ahead.  Apples, pumpkins, pecan nuts…what are your favorites?

Watch this video, download books to read together, and explore things to do with BookSpring.

Read Together at Home

Here are some books to read together!  (Add intro to specific titles here)! You can download and save them and keep them forever, to read again and again.

Things to Do Together

  • Learn more with our partner Austin PBS: Play the Veggiezilla Game
  • Learn more with our partner Austin PBS: Play the Food Farmer Game
  • If you have crayons/markers and paper – let your child draw some fruits and vegetables and cut them out. They will then hide these items around the house and let you/their siblings do a scavenger hunt to find them.
  • Did you know you can make corn dance? All you need is water, vinegar, baking soda, and popping corn.
  1. Find a tall glass/mason jar and add 2 cups of water to it.
  2. Place it somewhere that can easily be cleaned, as it may overflow!
  3. Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda and mix – you can talk about how things dissolve.
  4. Add ¼ cup of popping corn.
  5. Slowly add vinegar (up to 1 cup) and be ready for the corn to dance!
  • A reaction occurs between the vinegar and baking soda where they combine to produce carbon dioxide. These bubbles lift the corn, but the corn falls back down as the bubbles pop. You can repeat this process over and over again!

Ways to move together

  1. Logrolling: lie down with hands at your sides – can you roll over and over like a log rolling down a hill?
  2. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, reach up to the left as you pretend to pick an apple then bring your hands down to place the apple in the imaginary bucket next to your left foot. Repeat on both sides, stretching up and reaching down.

Share Together

At the end of the week, reflect on what you read, and what you did.

  • Did you…
  • I learned…
