Congressman John Carter to Read to Children at Lone Star Circle of Care Clinic

On Thursday, August 9th, Congressman John Carter will read to a waiting room full of children in support of Reach Out and Read (ROR), a program that that trains medical providers to advise parents about the importance of reading aloud and to give free books to children at check-ups from 6 months to 5 years.

Lone Star Circle of Care has 6 locations in Central Texas that participate in Reach Out and Read. Lone Star Circle of Care’s pediatric locations are part of eight Reach Out and Read programs in Texas’ 31st Congressional District. Four of those eight are operated by BookSpring, a local nonprofit organization providing over 27,000 Reach Out and Read books to children annually.

In additional to its other early literacy programs, BookSpring partners with 30 health care clinics to implement Reach Out and Read with the purpose of serving Greater Austin’s low income families that lack access to books, libraries, and reading opportunities. ROR is designed to take advantage of the existing structure of pediatric primary care, in which parents of young children have regular one-to-one, developmentally-focused visits with pediatricians from six months to 5 years of age.

BookSpring began partnering with LSCC in April, 2005. Last year, the partnership proudly provided 10,684 ROR program services and books to children and families served by LSCC’s medical providers.
