BookSpring’s Volunteer Spotlight highlights our gratitude for the heroes behind the scenes. The Volunteer Spotlight is on Sheila Carver, a dedicated volunteer who loves kids and books! She has been volunteering with us since 2019.
What is your volunteer role with BookSpring? What are some of the activities you have helped with?
My favorite role at BookSpring is sorting books that have been donated. I assess them according to BookSpring guidelines, so they are ready for the next step in the process. It is satisfying to think of children receiving the books and to appreciate the many wonderful donations.
What do you like about BookSpring?
I admire all the efforts of BookSpring staff and volunteers to build literacy in our community. These efforts and those of our donors can and do make a difference in the lives of children.
Why is reading important to you?
I read for all kinds of reasons and consider it a great gift. Reading allows you to enter any world, real or imagined, to learn, enjoy or participate as a spectator. I read every single day and could not imagine my life without books.
What is your favorite children’s book?
There are so many thousands of wonderful children’s books. One of my favorites is Hank the Cowdog by John R. Erickson. The book has connections for children of different ages and adults too. Erickson evokes time and places beautifully. Anyone who has ever imagined the lives of our animal friends would enjoy this book!
