Monster Readers for 6-8 year olds

Do you like spooky things?  I do!  Bibi here, talking to you today about monsters!  Monsters can be scary, and monsters can be nice…trucks can be monsters, and so can little sisters and brothers!  But the kind of monsters I like most are monster readers…people who really, really, really like to read!  Are you a monster reader?

Watch this video, download books to read together, and explore things to do with BookSpring.

Read Together

Here are some books to read together!  You can download and save them and keep them forever, to read again and again.

Zandi and Birdy Monster

  • Do you have an imaginary friend?
  • If you could have any imaginary friends, what would they look like? What would y’all do together?

Shh! What’s that?

  • Has anyone accidentally scared you before bed?
  • Have you ever made a shadow monster?

Asamo is that you?

  • Have you ever lost someone in the dark?
  • What would you do if you were Yumum’s place?

Things to Do Together

  • Talk about what you could do to become a monster reader:
    • read every day
    • read different formats- books, recipes, signs, magazine, e-books, etc and read about as many topics as you can think of
    • Take time after reading to talk about the book – asking questions helps your child to engage with the book and create deeper connections
  • Make your own monsters using toilet rolls, egg cups, paper, and whatever supplies you have available. Remember that monsters take all shapes and sizes so there is no right or wrong. For ideas you can look at https://frugalfun4boys.com/silly-monster-craft-for-kids/
  • Why do some people think monsters are scary? Talk a little about fear of the unknown. Anything you want to know more about, you can surely find out from a book.

Ways to Move Together

Can you move like a monster?

  • shake your claws
  • wiggle your tail
  • stomp your feet
  • give a roar
  • move your eyes side to side
  • twitch your warts

Share Together

At the end of the week, reflect on what you read, and what you did.

  • What are you going to do this week to start your journey to becoming a monster reader?
