The accent was on HAPPY as we gathered together in the Fall with family and friends for the Happy Hour, an engaging virtual event with Authors Sarah Bird and David Rice. We raised $12,318 “with a little help from our friends,” enabling BookSpring to extend that critical lifeline of literacy to more kids, building home libraries with their very own forever books.
Sarah and David certainly gave new meaning to Books are a Lifeline with wonderful stories about their personal journeys, roads traveled, and lessons learned along the way.

Sarah Bird is an eight-time winner of Austin Best Fiction Writer; a finalist for the Dublin Literary Award; winner of the 2020 Paul Ré Award for Cultural Advocacy; a 2015 selection for Meryl Streep Screenwriters’ Lab; and was selected to be the hologram/greeter for the Austin Downtown Library in honor of her work for libraries and literacy.
Sarah is also an Amazon Literature Best of the Year selection; a two-time winner of the TIL’s Best Novel award; a B&N’s Discover Great Writers selection; a New York Public Libraries Books to Remember; and a member of the Texas Writers Hall of Fame. CLICK HERE for Sarah’s website.
David Rice has always lived in Texas. Born in 1964 in Weslaco, he now divides his time between Austin and the Rio Grande Valley, where he teaches and mentors high school students in creative writing. South Texas and his Mexican American culture are the inspiration for his work. He is the award-winning author of Give the Pig a Chance, Crazy Loco and Heart-Shaped Cookies. David’s stories have been included in several other anthologies for adults and teens.
As a literacy consultant, David has created teacher workshops to build and grow confident readers and writers using his flash fiction stories both in print and to be viewed in both English and Spanish on YouTube. CLICK HERE for David’s website.
