Kovid’s Book Reviews

Kovid has more Young Adult (YA) book recommendations. Heres’s an action-packed trilogy perfect for kids age 11-13.  The Hunger Games is a series of young adult dystopian novels written by Suzanne Collins. The novels in the trilogy are titled The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay.

The Hunger Games

This book is full of love, hate, and action. The Hunger Games are hosted by The Capital. There are twelve districts from which a boy and girl are chosen randomly to participate. Katniss Everdeen, the main character and 16-year-old girl, protected her younger sister by taking her place in the Hunger Games. Through bloody fights, she reaches the top 3 of 24 tributes, the chosen boys and girls. Teaming up with Peeta, a boy from the same district, the two win the Games. My favorite part of the book was when Katniss and Peeta won the Games by playing the gamekeepers. I recommend this book because it gets very intense and really hooks the reader when the climax approaches.

Catching Fire

This book is full of surprises that completely changed the course of the book. The action really hooked me in. There were moments that you could never guess would happen. The build-up to the climax and climax itself was insane. This is the second book in a series. My favorite part was when Katniss, the main character, broke the force field dome, which kept them in the arena, during the games. This book was a complete thriller

Mockingjay

I enjoyed it because every moment in the book was action-packed and exciting. This is the third book in the series. After 75 years of the capital ruling unfairly, The districts decided to rebel. Katniss Everdeen, the main character, sparked the rebellions without meaning to when she beat the capital in their own game in the first book of the series. From then on, she was considered the Mockingjay. Her role in the war was to turn all the districts against the capital. Later on in the book, Katniss and a few other soldiers including Peeta, Gale, and Finnick, infiltrated the capital and tried to kill the president. As they make their way, the rebels break through the capital’s defenses. The rebels bomb capital children but Katniss’ sister is caught up in the fire. After talking to the capital’s president, Katniss kills the rebels’ president in order to avenge her sister. She is banished and has to go live in District 12 where Peeta and Haymitch accompany her. In a few years, Katniss and Peeta have children and find happiness where there shouldn’t be any. I loved this book because, in the end, the protagonist defeated the capital, avenged her sister, and lived happily ever after.
