20 books by 2020 Story Challenge: Barbara M.

Barbara Mott is the librarian at Rodriguez Elementary. After years of working as an educator, this bibliophile had a change of heart. Barbara opted to go back to school to become alibrarian. Her passion for books shaped her life.

Barbara recalled her mother always reading to her and her siblings. Growing up she could typically be found with her face buried in a book.  As an avid reader, she strives to inspire and motivate her students to do the same.

Barbara is an education partner helping us provide children in Central Texas with 20 books by 2020. Checkout her Story Challenge!

What was your favorite children’s book, and who was the author?

Barbara: My favorite children’s book is The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams.

What was it about this book that made it special to you?

Barbara: I love the idea that toys like the stuffed animals that we love can become “real”. The characters

are so vivid. The imagery so beautiful.

Who was your favorite character?

Barbara: The rocking horse was my favorite character. She was so kind, loving and comforting. She was

very much like a parent.

What was the overall lesson or theme from the book?

Barbara: None of us is more special than the other. We all deserve to be loved despite our flaws.

How did it change your life for the better?

Barbara: It taught me kindness towards all things and to value even those who may seem shabby.

What would you say to a parent who says they don’t have time to read together with their kids?

Barbara: You are missing out on the very best bonding time with your child that you could possibly have! Make it a bedtime ritual and you’ll NEVER regret it!
