Giving Back Year Round

By Lori Butler, The Junior League of Austin

In this month of sharing thanks and giving back, I pride myself on being able to accomplish this year round as an active member of The Junior League. Fortunately, this year I was able to secure a role in working hand in hand with BookSpring, an Austin-based nonprofit organization that instills children and their parents with a love of reading and promotes books as a means to success.

I have been fortunate enough to work directly with local schools and even more closely with the librarians who play such an integral role in encouraging and stimulating the minds of children through reading.

No volunteer opportunity has been more rewarding or important from the other as each has one common goal, to excite students and their parents about the value of reading. I have assisted librarians with setting up for their annual book fair to being super creative and designing and creating decor for the Books for Me program.

Additionally, myself and my fellow Junior League members get together every so often at BookSpring headquarters and work collectively as a team for larger needs of a school which most recently contributed to Metz Elementary. We filled construction paper leaves with positive messages and wishes for the students for their library’s Wish Tree.

As an early lover of reading myself, it excites me that there are organizations such as BookSpring that dedicate their resources to promoting the value and importance of reading and succeeding.
