Volunteer Spotlight: Literacy First

Literacy First is an esteemed AmeriCorps program in the Austin community. Since 1994, Literacy First has worked to ensure that children in Central Texas are successful readers before third grade.

Not only do these AmeriCorps members provide intensive one-on-one and small group literacy intervention at various Title 1 schools, they also give their time to numerous Austin area nonprofit organizations.

BookSpring is one of several options tutors can select as their community partnership. These volunteers commit to provide various nonprofits with ongoing support through the duration of the school year.

Last year we were fortunate to have three devoted volunteers who kept our ReBook inventory flowing to community partners.

Anna Bradley, Joe Jacobson, and Emma Kate Scholtz were at the office almost every day throughout the week. They diligently processed donations by sorting, leveling, and labeling age appropriate books, amid revisiting their favorite children’s classics.

Emma Kate said, “I chose to volunteer with BookSpring because I love to read, and wanted to help children in Austin discover the joy of reading!”

Through service with Literacy First, volunteers are inspired to a lifetime of service through a meaningful and productive experience. These AmeriCorps members serve a vital role in helping us maintain our ReBook inventory; use their artistic skills to help improve our motivational activities; and assist us with data entry.

AmeriCorps members come from a variety of backgrounds from recent college graduates to retired senior citizens seeking to make an impact through service. With BookSpringGo, volunteers can make an impact through books.
