Engaging and activating young minds to think philanthropically
BookSpring’s Read-A-Thon encourages community service and sharing the joy of book ownership with children in our community. During the two week event, students and book lovers read and collect donations based on the number of minutes they read. The donations buy books and support BookSpring’s childhood literacy programs in the Greater Austin area.
Students register to participate with their school or as an individual if their school is not participating. Once registered, and with help from parents, students solicit pledges from friends and family in support of their reading. Students log the amount of time and the number of pages read during the Read-A-Thon.
At the end of the Read-A-Thon, students collect donations and turn in their pledge envelopes to their teachers. The results are tallied and awards are announced. Incentives are awarded to students, classrooms, and schools based on the level of funds raised. Schools and students compete for top fundraising and reading medals. At each school, three medals are awarded: Most Minutes Read, Most Pages Read, and Most Funds Raised. There is also a prize for the top fundraising classroom at each school. In addition, a prize is awarded to the top overall Read-A-Thon fundraising student and a trophy is awarded to the top overall Read-A-Thon fundraising school.
