Weds Oct 28, 2015: To celebrate BookSpring’s achievement in delivering its one millionth book to children of Greater Austin, community leaders, such as First Lady of Austin Diane Land, Superintendent Paul Cruz and Senator Kirk Watson will be participating in BookSpring’s “Austin Reads Aloud” Day by visiting nearly 50 schools to read aloud to students. Austin Mayor Steve Adler and Other Leaders Celebrate the Joy of Books

Additionally, Austin Mayor Steve Adler will declare October 28, 2015, “Austin Reads Aloud with BookSpring Day.” The Mayor will recognize BookSpring’s 40 years providing donations and motivational reading programs to children and their advocates. BookSpring will be delivering its one millionth book to Austin area children from low-income families this year, in line with Austin’s achievement of being one of America’s most literate cities.

“Reading is a skill that affects a child’s future, and BookSpring is helping create a positive future for Austin,” said Mayor Adler. “Today’s activities and special honor highlight the proven power of reading aloud to a child for a lasting positive impact.”

Read to a child today, take a snapshot and share your favorite social media, and proclaim your love of reading with everyone!

“We work tirelessly for all children, including the disadvantaged, helping them build their own library at home,” said Executive Director Emily Ball Cicchini. “On Austin Reads Aloud Day, the children will see the commitment of Austin’s leaders to the importance of reading and witness how much they’re valued.”

Reading matters all year round

Part of BookSpring’s success in providing books to children is their annual Read-A-Thon. Kids get involved by reading for 12 straight days while collecting pledges from other book lovers. Top readers win prizes, and proceeds benefit support BookSpring’s book distribution programs. The art contest closes November 2, and the Read-A-Thon kicks off in January.
