A Special Senior Moment

Submitted by: Mindy Gomillion, BookSpring Board Member

Today is National Senior Citizens Day, a time to celebrate the wisdom and achievements of older people. We’d like to take this opportunity to recognize one of the Champions of BookSpring for his extraordinary contributions to our society.

Born in 1924 in Bonham, Texas to Lucie Clift and Pinckney Bryan Price, P. Clift Price, MD is a retired Pediatrician with both private practice and public health careers. His list of accomplishments and community service are impressive.

Clift is the former Director of the Division of Maternal and Child Health for the Texas Department of Health. He has served as President of the Travis County Medical Society, President of the Texas Pediatric Society, Medical Advisor to the Cystic Fibrosis Center and the Texas School for the Blind and Deaf, and as a consultant to the Regional Head Start program and the Texas Department of Crippled Children’s Technical Advisory Committee. He has been a lobbyist for the Texas Pediatric Society and the Texas Medical Association advocating for the concerns of children and was an early champion of the Texas Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

A founding member of the University Area Rotary Club, Clift is actively involved in a Rotary Club initiative to fight tuberculosis on the Texas border region. He recently received the Rotary International Service Above Self Award, an internationally competitive award granted to a limited number of Rotarians who have demonstrated exemplary humanitarian service.

Clift’s selflessness and compassion are also evidenced by his service on numerous nonprofit boards, including the Austin Community Foundation, the Austin Parks Foundation, Barbara Jordan Freedom Foundation, Capital Area Reach Out and Read, Center for Child Protection, the Children’s Advocacy Center, and Texans Care for Children.

Clift, along with fellow BookSpring Champion Karen Hayward, PhD, is one of the visionaries that established the Reach Out and Read program in the Austin area. He is responsible for securing its endorsement by the Texas Pediatric Society.

Despite his full schedule, Clift makes time to play tennis, sale on Lake Travis and keep up with six grandchildren.

We thank you so much for all you do for the Austin community. You are truly a Champion of BookSpring!
