BookSpring launched its inaugural Storybook Heroes Luncheon at St. David’s Episcopal Church on Wednesday, April 17, 2013. With over 200 people in attendance and performance artists from Hill Country Middle School and Zach Theatre portraying classic storybook characters cavorting among the guests, it was an enlightening and entertaining event!

Cliff Collier, General Manager of Presenting Sponsor Howdy Honda, stressed that the future of this country relies on our youth and that a person that cannot read will always be dependent on someone else for their information. Mark Strama talked about the importance of establishing a strong foundation for literacy acquisition during a child’s first 3 years of life, and pointed out that BookSpring is the only organization in Central Texas whose primary mission is to do just that. Amy Clark Meachum explained how children learn to read proficiently and presented an overview of BookSpring’s continuum of literacy programs.

Guests were treated to a video presentation on the early literacy crisis, produced by Bah!Design.

Carl Stuart, an independent investment adviser and host of KLBJ’s Money Talk, emceed the charming event which was capped with a presentation of the Storybook Hero Awards to the Rotary Club of Austin, Austin University Area Rotary Club, and Austin Cosmopolitan Club.
