What are Book Deserts?
In 2016, Susan B. Neuman, professor of childhood and literacy education at New York University, conducted a study and concluded that book deserts exist when there is a rise in income segregation. Family’s are negatively impacted and unable to provide reading material for their children and that ultimately affects a child’s chances to succeed academically.

At BookSpring we’ve taken the best practices of our founding national programs and adapted them to the special needs of Central Texas low-income families. We have created a continuum of early literacy interventions that support brain development, family interaction, skill building and the motivation to read in children from birth through age 12. Now we need to expand our programs to priority zip codes designated as Book Deserts.
There are 20 zip codes in Central Texas where we could be doing a much better job of reaching the right kids with the right books at the right time. These zip codes were identified as being high poverty in numbers or percentage of children by the American Community Survey released November 2018, and then cross referenced with our annual program data for both number of children and number of books distributed over the past five years.

Share and share alike. Online days of giving are successful because of our own networks. Help us grow our network by sending this email to your network and ask your friends to do the same.
Be socially (media) active. Use your social media networks: post on Facebook and Instagram, tweet about Amplify Austin Day, and share your passion for books and reading. Ask others to do the same. Don’t forget to us the campaign hashtag #AmplifyBookSpring #EndBookDeserts.
