Reach Out and Read

Reach Out and Read (ROR). With ROR, literacy promotion becomes a standard part of pediatric care. ROR trains pediatricians and nurses on how to effectively advise parents about the importance of reading aloud to their children. Children are given books at pediatric check-ups from six months to five years of age, with special focus on children growing up in impoverished homes. By building on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers, ROR helps families and communities cultivate early literacy skills, a love for reading, and better preparation for reading success in school. Founded at Boston Medical Center in 1989, ROR is a national non-profit organization.
