Reading is Fundamental

Reading Is Fundamental (RIF). RIF programs prepare and motivate children to read by delivering free books and literacy resources to children and families who need them most, with priority given to underserved children from birth to age 8. RIF fosters literacy through a powerful combination of reading motivation, family and community involvement, and the excitement that comes from choosing free books to keep. Founded in 1966, RIF is the oldest and largest children's and family nonprofit literacy organization in the country.

RIF's Books for Ownership. By blending book ownership, motivational activities and family involvement, children, families and the community in the Books for Ownership program are discovering the joys and benefits of reading together. Books for Ownership is making a difference in the lives of young people of all ages, and in a variety of settings, including elementary schools, pre-schools, childcare centers, and through the home-based parenting programs of partnering not-for-profit organizations.

Shared Beginnings. This program reaches out to teenage parents enrolled in parent education programs at area high schools, encouraging them to play an active role in the development of their children’s early language and literacy skills. Program activities provide parents with practice in reading aloud to their children and in planning early learning experiences that will stimulate language development in infants and toddlers. Parents also learn how to choose picture books that their children will enjoy.
