Students share the joy of reading!
Through the Read-A-Thon, children experience the joy of reading and the pride of community service by raising money to put new books into the hands of children who need them most.
Why participate?
For the children - For every year a child is read to, the average lifetime earnings increase by $50,000.
For the families - While in middle income neighborhoods the ratio of books per child is 13 to 1, in low income neighborhoods the ratio is 1 age appropriate book for every 300 children.
For the community - The U.S Department of Education expects the literacy gap in America will produce a shortage of 12 million qualified workers in the next decade
A little goes a long way.
Participants read for two weeks and collect pledges for each page read.
$5 donation = 2 new books for local children in need
(1 teacher x 20 readers) x $5 = 40 books
20 classrooms x 40 books = 320 books
