Learning Values

Submitted by: Kelly Breeden

My favorite books as a child were The Value Tale series written by Ann Donegan Johnson and Dr. Spencer Johnson. My mom purchased these treasures that tell inspiring stories of famous people, while sharing examples of different values such as leadership, honesty, helping others, and saving. I especially loved the stories: Harriet Tubman taught helping, Confucius taught honesty, and Winston Churchill taught leadership.

The series captured my heart because I learned about these fascinating people while experiencing important lessons that I have used throughout my life. An “aha” moment for me, was that the values ingrained in the famous figures, were values that could make me, or any of my friends, special too! I was so enchanted with the books that I signed my name in every copy and I still have them today!

When I think about students who do not have the opportunity to share the reading experiences that I had at home as a child, I am so proud that The Junior League of Austin supports BookSpring! I am encouraged and comforted that Austin students have access to donated books, participate in library reading activities like “Reading Is FUNdamental,” and are exposed to BookSpring’s loving and dedicated team of staff and volunteers.
