One (of the Many) Books My Child Knows by Heart

Submitted by: Vickie L.

Ever since he was a baby, we have a daily ritual we’ve done with my son, who is now almost 3 and a half. Every night after bath time, he gets into his pajamas, and sits on either his dad’s or my lap to read two stories. We’ve negotiated it down to two stories, because if it were up to him, he’d probably read books all night and never go to bed.

He tends to get attached to a story for a few months and we read ad nauseam before moving on to the next story. Regardless of the book, my son has it memorized, word for word. If you miss a word, rest assured, he’ll tell you and request that you try reading that page again, correctly this time.

His longest running favorite book has been Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site by Sherri Duskey Rinker. We’ve read it every single night for at least six months. It was perfect for him because it combined his love of machinery and trucks with the concept that everyone and everything goes to sleep at night — even construction vehicles. It brings the world of the construction site alive for kids with fast-moving rhymes about the various vehicles’ jobs on the site, while the sing-song rhythm is catchy enough to stay (pleasantly enough) in parents’ minds long after bedtime passes.

My son would recite the words on the pages with me, and, every time we reached the page where the dump truck moves dirt from place to place and “dumps it with a happy face,” he would turn to me and imitate the illustration on the page, by showing me a big, toothy “happy face” just like the dump truck.
